SPECIALIZING IN FINE ANTIQUE VINTAGE JEWELRY & COLLECTIBLES. These prices come from GIA recognized. THE wholesale price guide for dealers. These values do not dictate what a piece is worth. This is the price a piece would be worth if stripped down and melted to its bare materials. This beautiful piece was made by a very talented Native American silversmith. It features hand crafted silversmith work throughout. Antique Native American jewelry is very rare to find. This is due to these pieces being made for reservation and personal use before the tourist trade became popular. Very few pieces were made and even less survived to today. One of the most important forms of Navajo and Southwestern Native American jewelry, is the Squash Blossom Necklace. Most are made of a string of plain round silver beads, interspersed with more stylized “squash blossoms”, and feature a pendant, or “naja”, hung from the center of the strand. The squash blossom beads are copied from the buttons which held together the pants worn by the Spanish, and later, Mexican caballeros. These buttons represent – and are modeled after pomegranates. Their identification as “squash blossoms”, which they closely resemble, is an understandable, and often repeated, error. The naja, which resembles an upside-down horse shoe, completes the design. Their origin can be found a continent, and several hundred years away, as a traditional part of Spanish horse halters. In 1903, anthropologist Uriah Hollister wrote about the Navajo; he said, Belts and necklaces of silver are their pride… They are so skillful and patient in hammering and shaping that a fairly good-shaped teaspoon is often made of a silver dollar without melting and casting. Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver first formed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refined by hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as an eye-catching treasure. The squash blossom includes a gorgeous hand cabochon cut and polished piece of Blue Turquoise. The Turquoise is vibrant with solid hues throughout. The piece is made from solid Sterling Silver and is completely handmade. It features traditional Navajo Nation silver work throughout. The necklace is a traditional Navajo Nation Squash Blossom from C. The Squash Blossom includes hand hammered repousse bench beads with hand cut squash blossom pendants that hang off the sides of the necklace. The necklace also includes a traditional horse shoe shaped Naja pendant that hangs from the bottom. The necklace is a perfect size, on the smaller side so that it can accessorize worn with just about anything. The necklace has a wearable length of 22. The beads measure 8 mm in diameter. The squash blossom pendants measure just over 1 and 1/4. The Naja measures 2 and 1/4″ by 2″. The necklace has a secure shepard hook clasp as well.
