Antique Native American jewelry is very rare to find. This is due to these pieces being made for reservation and personal use before the tourist trade became popular. Very few pieces were made and even less survived to today. Zuni Jewelry is very distinct and different from other Native American Tribes. Zuni jewelry features gorgeous stone work coupled with inlay designs, Petit Point, and Needle Point. This combined with exceptional Silver work has made the Zuni Tribe one of the best known Silversmith tribes in the world. Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver first formed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refined by hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as an eye-catching treasure. Historians believe the link between humans and lapis lazuli stretches back more than 6,500 years. The gem was treasured by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. They valued it for its vivid, exquisite color, and prized it as much as they prized other blue gems like sapphire and turquoise. Red Coral is a highly prized stone by Native American cultures. It has been a sign or symbol of wealth and status in many different Native American cultures. Onyx is a chalcedony quartz that is mined in Brazil, India, California and Uruguay. It has a fine texture and black color; however, some onyx also displays white bands or ribbons against a black or brown background and this variety is known as sardonyx. The name comes from the Greek word onyx which means nail of a finger or claw. Legend says that one day while Venus was sleeping Eros/Cupid cut her fingernails and left the clippings scattered on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into stone which later became known as onyx. A form of chalcedony, jasper is an opaque mineral of virtually any color. Jasper is often observed with patterns that occur during the minerals formation. Certain forms of jasper such as the pale green variety have been popular since the ancient period; the Minoans on Crete favored green jasper for their seals, but green jasper was also popular among the Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, and Hebrews of antiquity. Hailed as a significant gemstone among the ancients, it was also used to produce objects larger than jewelry such as vases and other vessels.
