For sale is a collectible Hopi Charles Loloma handmade sterling silver turquoise, coral, malachite, lapis, and ironwood inlay hair piece. Although he was a painter, potter and sculptor, he was best known for his jewelry. He started making jewelry in 1955 and changed the look of Hopi jewelry. He experimented with turquoise, coral, lapis lazuli, ivory, and exotic woods, which was unusual at the time. Many of his bracelets and pendants are made of vertical slabs of stones stacked next to each other. One of his trademarks was to line the inside of a bracelet or ring with stones more valuable than those on the outside. He studied ceramics at the School of American Craftsmen at Alfred University. His work has been exhibited internationally and represented in numerous collections nationwide. Even after becoming globally famous, Loloma remained true to his heritage and always kept a studio in Hotevilla where he was born. Charles Loloma passed away in 1991 but he permanently changed Native American jewelry. He left behind a legacy of completely new, contemporary designs and a variety of unique materials that had never been used in Native American jewelry before him. It measures 2-1/4 ” long, 1 -3 /16 ” wide, and 1-3/8 tall. Ironwood stick measures 3-5/8 long. The back has the Loloma hallmark. The piece pictured is the one you will receive!
