This is an IMPRESSIVE ring… Of course its size, but more than this, the TURQUOISE, its fabulous intense colors.. It is one of TOM BEGAY’s turquoise… He has to be the master of these special big crazy turquoise! Once in a while he goes to work. He picks up his buckets. He finds an interesting stone…. And the miracle happens it makes a fabulous piece. After spending a lot of time carving, buffing, polishing.. The NAVAJO artist TOM BEGAY is an old fashioned artist! He has been making jewelry all his life… Which has to be close to a century! And all this time he stayed fidel to the traditional original NAVAJO style. With his trembling hands, the wise wrinkles engraved on his face and his few words of English, he keeps the old tradition alive. And there it is again, a huge ring with a powerful almost round turquoise. Its color and its matrix are so interesting, different and unique, I had to ask him which mine was the turquoise from… And as always the answer was Kingman, Kingman… I will never know if he is joking, making fun of me… Or simply does not understand my eternal question! But as always it is a wonderful piece. It has a raw edge to it. Not just the simple setting but the turquoise by itself. Maybe it comes from the matrix. It is a very intense matrix in color and shape. Very powerful, almost violent! This big wave of golden caramel coming in and invading the stone, with the light gold tan piercing the turquoise. And it seems the invasion dissipates slowly, leaving traces of earthy smoke.. Nevertheless the turquoise stays strong, maybe even stronger. The blue gets bluer, the green gets greener… And it makes for a color close to teal. A “dark” blue green, even color, to support all the action.. The turquoise by itself is 2.5″ x 2″. Tom Begay did a perfect setting for the impressive stone. A minimal traditional setting. A thick twisted chain rope goes all around the stone, then a half round.
